Public Talk Peter Frankopan

Peter Frankopan is Professor of Global History at the University of Oxford, Director of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research, and Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College.

His work explores the connections between cultures, regions and civilizations, with a particular focus on Byzantium, the Silk Roads, Central Asia, Russia and the Middle East.

He is the author of the international bestseller The Silk Roads: A New History of the World, which offers a new perspective on the networks of exchange that have shaped global history. His most recent book, The Earth Transformed: An Untold History, examines the relationship between the natural environment and the course of human history.

In Baku — a city shaped by centuries of trade and cultural exchange between East and West — Peter Frankopan explores the world of the Silk Roads and the networks that connected people, ideas, cultures and goods across vast distances. As part of the BIAF Public Talk programme, he brings this history into dialogue with Baku itself — a city that has long stood at the crossroads of these encounters.
